FMM138 – Take Your Opportunities or Someone Else Will

We all get opportunities in life, some that come quite regularly and others that are more significant and rare.

We sometimes call them lucky breaks, the types of opportunities that can make a huge difference in our life…

…and none of us wants to be the person who had that chance and let that golden opportunity slip through their fingers.

If you are not prepared, you’ll miss your chance and now the opportunity is gone…

…And it won’t ever come around again.

So maybe you’re thinking “well how am I going to get a lucky break in my situation? I’m not the kind of person who gets lucky… I don’t know the right people”.

And I get it. Some people seem to have all the luck whilst others sit on the sidelines. But is it really luck…

…or are successful producers up to something that failed producers simply aren’t?

In this podcast I’ll be giving you the key actions and mindset that can be the difference between accelerating your career and missing out for good on your dreams…

Key takeaways:

  • “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
  • How to be that extra percent that makes the difference.
  • What to do when opportunities present themselves
  • The only way you will be able to grab golden opportunities when they arrive in your life.

FMM137 – Forging a Career in Today’s Music Scene With Cassy (Aus Music)

If you’re like most music producers juggling the logistics of home life with studio time you’re going to love this episode…

Today I’m sitting down with Cassy, a globally in-demand DJ and producer who boasts landmark recorded mixes for the likes of Panorama bar and Fabric, and has releases on a who’s who of labels from Aus Music to Uzuri and Bass Culture.

Now, this conversation is a real ride…

We dig deep into Cassy’s journey through the highs and the lows of pursuing a career that she so clearly loves. From how she creates and collaborates with her music, the equipment she uses, and playing all over the world, all of that good stuff, to her personal struggles and balancing the magic whilst also wrestling with the difficult aspects of the industry.

We discussed the challenges, the opportunities, the things about the scene that really lights Cassy up and the things that put her off…

…and even had her questioning whether she wanted to carry on or not.

If you’re looking to forge a career as a DJ or producer in today’s scene then this super candid conversation is essential listening.

Quotes:

  • “The things that motivate you are more important than the fame and the glamor.”
  • “I only learn to do things if I have to use it and apply it”

Key takeaways:

  • It’s your music and you should do whatever you want with it. Don’t care too much about what other people say.
  • Don’t allow your fears and worries to get in the way of being your authentic selves.
  • Stop waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect setup, the perfect life. Learn to work with what you’ve got and just make the best use of it.
  • You don’t have to be an amazing producer to produce good music. You just have to have the right ideas and be creative and be daring and also be confident with your ideas.
  • There’s opportunity mixed with difficulty and challenges. Adapt and let things go. Don’t take things personally. Ride out the challenges so that you can enjoy more of the good stuff.

FMM136 – Creative Joy Is Yours for the Taking

Ever caught yourself saying things like “when I can write music as good as this top producer, then I’ll be happy”…?

Or, “when I have this piece of hardware, then I’ll be on fire”…?

While it may seem harmless at first, it’s actually a sure fire way to kill the vibe and all of your fun in the studio.

Because the issue with looking at external outcomes for your happiness as a producer is that it so often results in feeling a lack of contentment and joy RIGHT NOW…

And this of course leads you to avoid doing the very things that will get you the outcomes you really crave.

So today I’m going to be tackling what the solution is, sharing how you can stay upbeat and motivated in the studio every single day, and give your best towards getting the goals you really want to achieve.

Listen now to find out how!

Are you finding joy at the moment? Are you becoming the person you need to be?

Let me know in the comments…

Key takeaways:

  • Whoever you need to be in order to sustain yourself in the future is who you need to be now.
  • “Happiness is not contained in what you have. It’s contained in who you become.”
  • Shift your emotional state by grabbing a pen and paper and writing down all the things you’re grateful for.
  • By being grateful for what you have by finding joy in the journey, you’re more likely to achieve the outcomes you want.

FMM135 – Harnessing Creative Anxiety and Not Being Held Back by It

We all know that taking big leaps towards our goals requires taking radically different actions to the ones that we’re taking right now…

But we also know that these radically different actions will bring with them discomfort.

Maybe it’s creative anxiety, or the pain from pursuing a fitness goal, or perhaps the hunger of following a particularly difficult diet…there’s no denying it’s uncomfortable.

So the question is… how do you harness that emotion and feeling?

How do you use it to take action where most people try to avoid it?

And how do you be the person who takes life-changing actions to get the life-changing results you want?

Well, in this episode, I’m going to give you a strategy that serves me and the people who I coach extremely well in the pursuit of our goals, and it’ll flip everything you think you know about anxiety and pursuing your goals completely on its head…

Buckle up and let’s get started!

Key takeaways:

  • Being creatively anxious means that you’re going in the right direction.
  • Each time you dance with anxiety in pursuit of your goal the more resilience you build.
  • The minute you reach the point where things become comfortable, the minute you stop growing.
  • If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got.

FMM134 – Shouldn’t You Be Doing Something More Important With Your Life?

If there’s one thing a great many books and online gurus will tell you, it’s that in order for you to succeed, you need to know your purpose in life.

A purpose which transcends you, that serves the greater good, and builds your drive, optimism, and resilience to succeed.

And so the question beckons, will your career in music be held back until you’ve figured it out?
How do you connect with it, and why bother carrying on until you have?

Well in this episode I’m diving head first into what it means to find your purpose, and sharing from my own personal experience how it’s not as straightforward, or important, as you might think…

But if worked towards in the right way, can have an immeasurably positive impact on your music and your life.

Discover how in this week’s episode of The Finish More Music Podcast!

Key takeaways:

  • A purpose is the reason why we do the things we do.
  • While it’s great to have your purpose dialled in, it’s not essential to achieving great things.
  • You don’t find your purpose, your purpose finds you.
  • Action creates clarity, not the other way around.

FMM133 – The Machines Are Coming: Will Your Music Be Replaced By AI?

Today we’re going all sci-fi… yep, it’s time to talk about AI!

Now when you hear the term Artificial Intelligence (AI), you’re likely to either get super excited, or to feel the fear welling up inside of you…

And perhaps if you’re like me, it’s a mixture of both.

Because on the one hand, the advances in technology in this area give humanity and, as we’re going to be discovering, music producers some really exciting and innovative tools to work with.

But on the other hand, they deliver the very real possibility of replacing us in a great many ways, and that includes writing music.

So is this something to be feared? Might we one day be listening to music made by computers that is indistinguishable from that created by human beings? Will our tastes be manipulated by machines?

It’s a lot to wrap your head around, so let’s get started.

Key takeaways:

  • Music can now be written, composed, arranged, curated and performed entirely by AI.
  • AI cannot replace individuals from making music inspired by their unique lived experiences.
  • New technology is there to be embraced, but it’s up to us to think far ahead enough to protect people along the way.
  • “I know worrying works, because none of the stuff I worried about ever happened”.

FMM132 – How Badly Are Streaming Sites Hurting Artists?

Today we’re tackling a VERY divisive topic, one that for music producers worldwide has become the cause of a huge amount of debate in the last few years…

And that’s the impact that music streaming sites like Spotify, Apple Music and others are having on our scene.

Now, many people believe that the current streaming model is crippling artists and damages the underground music scene as we know it, whilst others see benefits that they can heavily lean into to further their careers.

And one group of people think that the streaming sites should be disempowered and shouldn’t impact the scene as much as they do, whilst others are taking actions that empower them.

So in this episode we’re deep diving into the facts: how the streaming model actually works, what alternatives are out there, and the various routes that any artist can take to get ahead in the music industry in 2021.

When you finish this episode you’ll have all the information you need to plot the best course for you, for your music, and to have the impact that you want on the scene you love.

It’s a full on episode for a full on topic, so let’s dive in!

Key takeaways:

  • For the vast majority of producers, music streaming sites like Spotify and Apple Music are not viable sources of income, but they do provide a huge opportunity to grow your audience.
  • Alternatives like Bandcamp are paving the way to a model which supports artists through buying music, but do not offer the same kind of exposure.
  • The system is far from perfect, but it’s your choice to look at it with a problem focus or an opportunity focus.
  • A sensible approach would be to have your music on as many platforms as possible and utilise the different benefits of each.

FMM131 – 5 Mindset Shifts for Higher Achievement

It doesn’t take an expert to know that when you’re achieving things, like ticking off your to-do list or having a kick-ass 30 minutes in the studio, it feels good.

And when you feel good, you’re able to achieve more!

But what happens when you’re NOT achieving things?

What happens when you feel like you’ve been wasting time, letting life slip through your fingertips, or when you see a real lack of progress with your music?

In short, it’s not good.

At best, stagnating will cause you to lose momentum. At worst, it will make you contemplate giving up this journey all together…

So in today’s episode, I’m sharing with you 5 proven techniques that will level up your productivity and accomplishments inside the studio, so you can make that feeling of achievement a permanent one…

Let’s get stuck in!

Key takeaways:

  • The more efficient you become in clearing tasks outside the studio, the more time you get to spend IN the studio.
  • The more efficient you are in the studio, the greater results you will achieve with your music.
  • Get yourself around the people that can share the innovative and inspiring techniques rather than trying to emulate and copy things.
  • Start from a place of simplicity and grow.
  • Get absolutely dialed in on where you want to go and how you want to get there so that you can start taking the action required to make that happen.

FMM130 – Rashid Ajami (Armada/Anjunadeep)

Today I’m joined by DJ, producer and multimedia artist Rashid Ajami.

Now Rashid has been releasing music for well over a decade on the likes of Armada, Anjunadeep, Get Physical and Einmusika to name a few, but the road to releasing on these top labels was far from plain sailing…

Like most producers, Rashid has had to deal with his own fair share of rejection, creative blocks and harsh self-criticism.

But in this episode, Rashid reveals what it took to come out more prolific and more creative than ever…

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • The importance of having an artistic concept in order to guide your creative output
  • Why consistently finishing music has got to be at the core of your success, no matter how far along the journey you are.
  • How to get signed and get your music heard on those big labels.
  • How to handle the inevitable rejections that come with being a creative.

And I’ve got a challenge for you: try to walk away from this episode without feeling super pumped to get into the studio and make music…

I bet you can’t do it!

Now let’s get stuck into this hugely motivating and inspiring session with Rashid Ajami.

Rashid Ajami and Booka Shade ‘Memories’ is out on August 20th on Blaufield Music. Look out for his NFT collection dropping on XLR8R Marketplace any day now…
