FMM149 – Boost Your Confidence and Enthusiasm by Measuring the Gap and Not the Gain

There’s a trap that you can fall into that is a sure fire way to lose your energy…

…A trap that will suck the enthusiasm right out of you.

And let me ask you, who is more likely to succeed, the person brimming with enthusiasm or the person feeling flat and disappointed?

How we measure our progress determines how much progress we are likely to make…and if we measure our progress in the wrong way it can end up getting us downbeat and lacking in enthusiasm.

In this episode, we look at how you can build enthusiasm, confidence, and resilience to keep taking the next leap in your creative journey.

Specifically, we’re going to be talking about an interesting phenomena that can make the difference between you feeling really motivated, inspired, and empowered, and ready to take action…

…or apathetic about your music and a great many other things in your life.

I’m going to reveal how one shift in outlook will determine whether you’re likely to move forward…

…or whether you are likely to stay still or potentially even regress.

Key takeaways:

  • “Comparison is the thief of joy”
  • Why you should celebrate your wins and measure the gain that you’ve experienced
  • How to make sure you are going to be more motivated and much more likely to take big meaningful leaps toward your version of success.

How to Make a Techno Rumble Bass

I have lost count of the amount of times I have been asked how to create that low end bass rumble sound that is synonymous with huge Techno tracks.

There are a million different techniques available on the interwebs.

Some simple, some overly complicated.

In this tutorial, I show you a quick way to create that low end energy. Plus I show you how to design an Ableton rack that you can drop in any new project and get that rumble rumbling in your music!

Thank you for watching

FMM148 – Embracing the Unexpected – Creativity Out of Chaos

Today we’re looking into a topic that I love…

…this is something that if leaned into can be the basis for a Pandora’s box of inspiration.

And if you embrace this strategy you will unlock new sonic territory and drive your creations in exciting and original directions.

However, if you’re closed off to this idea, you run the risk of being stuck using the same old style process, getting the same ideas on repeat and ultimately, carbon copies of your work!

...And of course this can potentially lead to boredom.

Creativity at its very heart is letting go. It’s being outside of our comfort zone. It’s accepting new ideas, new ways of working, being curious.

If you do want to push the envelope with your music, then you have to do something new…and something new is going to come from letting go.

There is a vast landscape of untapped potential waiting for you to discover if you choose to embrace it.

So if you want to learn how to create unique, original, exciting ideas for free, it would be madness not to adopt this tactic in your music…

Key takeaways:

  • What methods you can use to push the envelope with your music
  • How to avoid making carbon copies of your work
  • How to design an environment that encourages ideas that you wouldn’t necessarily expect.

FMM147 – Carl Craig (Planet E): Taking Your Music Into the Future

This week we’re joined by a Grammy-nominated producer, DJ, label owner, and bonafide pioneer of Detroit techno.

Someone who has continued to set trends and break boundaries with his music, his sound installations, and his performances.

The man in question is Carl Craig, a key figure in the electronic music scene who has blazed a trail through several decades under a variety of aliases and spanning a multitude of genres.

Founding his own record label Planet E Communications in 1991 Carl has rubbed shoulders with everyone from Kevin Saunderson to Derrick May.

So just how does he continue to innovate in a landscape where many artists cling to the safety of familiarity?

How do you challenge what’s been done before?

And more importantly where exactly do roller skates fit into this?

There’s so much to digest that you’ll need to revisit this one!

Key takeaways:

  • Why it’s important to stay open-minded and be open to other people’s ideas
  • “The great balance is in restrictions. There are no limitations. So, find limitations”
  • How to innovate and be a forward thinker

FMM145 – Opening the Creative Doors in Your Mind

Don’t be a ‘Yes, but…’ person!

We all know people who rubbish ideas.

Nobody wants to speak up and share ideas in their presence. And often nobody even wants to be around them.

And yet unwittingly, we often find ourselves being THAT person…

The person who picks holes in other people’s suggestions, cutting the creative connections dead…

…And who knows what the next idea might have been…

If we just keep cutting these ideas off with immediate judgment, if we keep abandoning stuff, we never make space in our own minds for our most innovative and original ideas to come through.

So how can you train yourself to be open-minded?

How can you make that your default state?

How can you establish a flourishing creative environment, giving yourself the opportunity to play, and the space to innovate?

This week I reveal how you can switch your way of operating and build confidence in the people around you.

Key takeaways:

  • “No idea is the wrong idea”.
  • “How you do anything is how you do everything”.
  • How to switch your way of operating to foster a creative space for yourself and others.
  • How to build confidence in the people around you.
