This Ableton Drum Tutorial shows you how to layer drums and percussion for maximum stereo width. This lesson works well for Deep House drums, Techno drums and any other electronic dance music genres.
There are a variety of stereo widening options in Ableton Live 9 but my personal favourite is using Simpler in an Instrument Rack to layer drum sounds.
In this tutorial we layer 2 claps and then using balancing techniques to ensure both sounds add width whilst mixing perfectly with our existing drum loop. We only need to adjust the length of one of the claps but at this stage you might also need to adjust pitch, filters and volume.
We finish with some drum EQ to give the claps more presence in the mix. Another good option to try at this point is adding a compressor to further glue the samples together.
This technique can be used on most drum and percussion sounds but beware… you can have too much of a good thing!
The next Ableton Live tutorial will be posted at the same time next week.
